Professional Experience
Elizabeth M. Burke joined Burke O'Neil LLC in January, 2006. Elizabeth has an active litigation practice with a focus on complex litigation involving civil and human rights work. She has represented international and domestic clients in product liability, bankruptcy, health care and environmental matters.
Elizabeth has substantial experience litigating civil and human rights cases. She acted as general counsel for The Disability Rights Council of Greater Washington, conducting numerous litigations under Title III of the American with Disabilities Act. She has advised clients in the creation of nationwide compliance programs aimed at ensuring greater public access for individuals with disabilities. She has also represented numerous applicants for political asylum and has litigated complex immigration issues. Elizabeth is currently assisting with the litigation of Saleh et al. v. Titan et al., a class action brought on behalf of the torture victims of Abu Ghraib and other prisons in Iraq.
Elizabeth has extensive experience handling public relation matters for clients and has directed several development campaigns. She advises for a non-profit board of directors in the area of domestic violence prevention, concentrating on board governance and finance.
Elizabeth was formerly with the law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton in the Washington D.C. office. She was formally affiliated with the Washington Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs through the Cleary Gottlieb externship program.
Education
Elizabeth M. Burke received her J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1990. She received her B.A in political science from Virginia Tech in 1987.
